Whidbey AIR & Home Connections Radio Lab Class and KIRO’s Rachel Belle

HC Radio KIRO Belle

Whidbey AIR has been assisting the Home Connections School in Oak Harbor with a radio lab class again this semester, and oh what fun!    It is our 2nd year working with Home Connections.

Adding some spice to the class this year,  Home Connections teacher Kelly Hall contacted KIRO Radio’s Rachel Belle and asked her to come to Home Connections to share with our students what it’s like to be a “real” radio host.   In her usual bubbly fashion Rachel agreed !

December 14th – Rachel came to the Home Connections campus in Oak Harbor, held an assembly for the students, showed them some of the equipment she uses to record and produce her show, and answered student questions about who, what, why and how she became a radio personality, produces her shows and find ideas for her subjects.

Then they all loaded up into parents cars and mini vans and headed to the Whidbey AIR studio for an on air LIVE interview with Rachel.

If you missed that interview it will be available again in Feb. IN conjunction with the Home Connections radio show “Home Connections Radio Magazine” – stay tuned.

If you have a kid who’s interested in recording, radio, music or hosting a show – contact us at feedback@kwparadio.org and we’ll set up a meeting time to help your young broadcaster what it takes to get involved with Whidbey AIR.

Author of End of Silence – Dorothy “Dot” Read joins Mary Rose and Annie

15594_573123042705273_1267189368_nAuthor Dorothy “Dot” Read joined hosts Mary Rose and Annie on Whidbey AIR’s Isle of the Arts to share the story of how her book End the Silence came to be written, how she spends her time helping other writers through the Whidbey Island Writers Association, and to read a selection from her book.

end-the-silence-book-cvverEnd the Silence is the memoir of  Ilse Evelijn Veere Smit, who was interned in a Japanese concentration camp for Dutch and Indo women and children, during World War II.

In 1945, Ilse, her 3 younger siblings and their mother lived in a vermin-infested bungalow with 35 other people at Camp Halmaheira on the island of Java.  During their internment, Ilse’s mother and several other women in that squalid bungalow were arrested for a “crime”, forcing Ilse to be responsible for herself and her younger siblings.  Surviving the camp, and eventually being freed at the end of WWII, Ilse found herself in the middle of a bloody Indonesian revolution, targeted for death.

Taking in excess of 5 yrs. to write End the Silence is a story of endurance, suffering and triumph.

A key volunteer with Whidbey Island Writers Association (WIWA) Dot also devotes time to the Altar Guild, the Banners and Paraments Committee and choir at her church.

During this interview Annie Zeller Horton will also be reading, from a WIWA submission.

You can find more information about Dot’s book End the Silence on her website or at Createspace.

Perry Woodfin’s DEBUT on Whidbey AIR

Hello Listeners,

Local Whidbey artist, and writer, Perry Woodfin, has been working on production of his new Whidbey AIR show Adult Content.  It’s been exciting and fun to have Perry contributing to our community generated content on Whidbey AIR. As per the title of his show, the best we can say is – don’t judge a show by its title.  During Adult Content Perry reads his original writings, accompanied by his choice of music, and not a vulgarity in sight.

This first edition includes a short story, When the Dust Settles, and two poems, Master Mind and Tracking Me.  Below is a note from Perry concerning this piece.

LISTEN Adult Content with Perry Woodfin – When the Dust Settles and 2 Poems

“My father, Don Woodfin, was a very resourceful man. He would use every opportunity to invent tools and was a real master of all trades. While living on Vashon Island he met and became friends with Betty McDonald and her husband. Betty MacDonald was the author of “The Egg and I”, among many other creations. Betty and her husband hired my dad to build a barn for them on their property. That barn is now on the National Historic Register as being considered historically relevant. Betty and her husband and my father and mother had many good times together until she died of cancer. “When the Dust Settled” is a story about my father and the type of character that he was; always positive always looking forward. I believe that’s why Betty liked my father. She possessed that same type of personality. All of her characters showed that.”  —– Perry Woodfin

~~

AND !!! there’s a little surprise at the end of Perry’s show from Whidbey AIR host Annie Zeller Horton.  - Enjoy.  And thank you for supporting community generated public radio on Whidbey Island.

NEW SHOW Hosts in Training !

Plugging right along building a radio station is just the same as building a house.  It is taking twice (or 3 times) as long and twice (or 5 times) the cost!  None the less we’re getting down with some training for new hosts.

Art Durand is joined by Dianna Worth, Annie Zeller-Horton and Jen McGrath.

Art and Dianna will be doing live shows (recorded while live for re-broadcast) while Annie and Jen will be doing pre-recordings of readings (poetry, children’s stories, short stories, just to name a few genres they’ll be working with.

It’s a good summer for KWPA Whidbey Air!  Hope it’s a good one for you too!
