  1. Holland Happening Barn Dance

Saturday, April 28th the Boys & Girls Club of Oak Harbor is hosting a Barn Dance at the Roller Barn. There will be a dance workshop at 7PM hosted by Charlie Moore of DJ’s Unlimited, followed by live music and dancing with the band, Paid ‘N Full, playing Classic Rock and Roll, Country, and Blues.

The Roller Barn has a long history of hosting barn dances. When the barn was completed in 1913 a barn warming party and dance was held to celebrate the occasion. The Neil family chartered a boat to bring an orchestra from Everett to play for the several hundred people who came from all over Whidbey and adjacent areas. Over 60 visitors from Coupeville arrived by launch at the Oak Harbor dock, where they were met by automobiles enlisted as taxis to take visitors to the barn. To augment lighting inside the barn lights were taken off a car and hung from the rafters. The evening was so successful it became a part of the local lore.

Barn dances have continued at the Roller Barn ever since. They were very popular in the 60’s and 70’s. People would come from all over the region on summer weekend evenings and pack the place. Johnny and the Moondogs, a local band, auctions off a dance at the barn at the annual Boys & Girls Club auction, and it has become one of the most popular events to bid on.

Boys & Girls Club of Oak Harbor has been bringing back the Barn Dance tradition. Copa Cabarna dances have been hosted with the roaring 20’s theme, and country dances have been held. Local and regional bands have been brought in to perform. According to Duncan Chalfant, member of the club advisory board “It is a great floor to dance on, and the music sounds great in the room. We’re hoping to make a barn dance an annual part of the Holland Happening weekend.”

Tickets for the event are $15 at the door or can be purchased in advance at the Club. All proceeds benefit the local club. Call Peg at 240-9273 for more information or to purchase tickets!

  2. Rainbow Carnage Group (RCG) presents PHYLLIS STEIN, playing music from Wig In A Box, the charity album featuring songs from and inspired by the cult-hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The band will perform two shows, 7:30 and 9:00pm, on Saturday, March 24, 2012 in Zech Hall at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts.

PHYLLIS STEIN is an exciting new Seattle-base band, featuring the unique vocal talents of lead-singer Aiden Karamanyan, familiar to Whidbey Island audiences from her ten years of regular appearances on Langley stages. After relocating to Seattle in 2005, this concert marks her much-anticipated return to her hometown, and gives Whidbey’s theatre-going community the opportunity to relive the talents that made her a staple in the theatre community for a decade while she blossomed from Ryan Karamanyan, a dark-haired, ample young man, into Aiden, a courageous woman faced with daily life challenges that only infuse her passion for performance art, and appreciation of life, love, and everything the music of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” contains.

PHYLLIS STEIN will perform music from Wig In A Box, honoring the traditional glam-rock concept, while featuring several numbers with specific voice-complimentary keyboard sounds, percussion, and a stand-up bass; allowing such songs as “Sugar Daddy” to feel all the more twangy, “Wicked Little Town” just a bit more heart-breaking in its simplicity, and “The Origin of Love” a full, titanic force to be reckoned with. It promises to be a musical evening to remember.

    Dates and Times: Saturday March 24, 2012 / 7:30pm and 9:00pm
Tickets At The Door: $10.00 General / $7.00 Students / $5.00 Teen Tix

“A Day on the Radio in 1946” will feature actors and musicians from all over Whidbey Island recreating original scripts of classic radio programs of the 1940s.
