The Whidbey AIR and Home Connections radio lab class has another hit on their hands.
Click to listen >Home Connections 2012/13 – Magazine Show
Whidbey AIR would like to thank Miss Kelly Hall for her support and the entire class for their hard work !
It’s always fun to work with Miss Hall and the students at Home Connections!!

Whidbey AIR has been assisting the Home Connections School in Oak Harbor with a radio lab class again this semester, and oh what fun! It is our 2nd year working with Home Connections.
Adding some spice to the class this year, Home Connections teacher Kelly Hall contacted KIRO Radio’s Rachel Belle and asked her to come to Home Connections to share with our students what it’s like to be a “real” radio host. In her usual bubbly fashion Rachel agreed !
December 14th – Rachel came to the Home Connections campus in Oak Harbor, held an assembly for the students, showed them some of the equipment she uses to record and produce her show, and answered student questions about who, what, why and how she became a radio personality, produces her shows and find ideas for her subjects.
Then they all loaded up into parents cars and mini vans and headed to the Whidbey AIR studio for an on air LIVE interview with Rachel.
If you missed that interview it will be available again in Feb. IN conjunction with the Home Connections radio show “Home Connections Radio Magazine” – stay tuned.
If you have a kid who’s interested in recording, radio, music or hosting a show – contact us at feedback@kwparadio.org and we’ll set up a meeting time to help your young broadcaster what it takes to get involved with Whidbey AIR.

Author Dorothy “Dot” Read joined hosts Mary Rose and Annie on Whidbey AIR’s Isle of the Arts to share the story of how her book End the Silence came to be written, how she spends her time helping other writers through the Whidbey Island Writers Association, and to read a selection from her book.
End the Silence is the memoir of Ilse Evelijn Veere Smit, who was interned in a Japanese concentration camp for Dutch and Indo women and children, during World War II.
In 1945, Ilse, her 3 younger siblings and their mother lived in a vermin-infested bungalow with 35 other people at Camp Halmaheira on the island of Java. During their internment, Ilse’s mother and several other women in that squalid bungalow were arrested for a “crime”, forcing Ilse to be responsible for herself and her younger siblings. Surviving the camp, and eventually being freed at the end of WWII, Ilse found herself in the middle of a bloody Indonesian revolution, targeted for death.
Taking in excess of 5 yrs. to write End the Silence is a story of endurance, suffering and triumph.
A key volunteer with Whidbey Island Writers Association (WIWA) Dot also devotes time to the Altar Guild, the Banners and Paraments Committee and choir at her church.
During this interview Annie Zeller Horton will also be reading, from a WIWA submission.
You can find more information about Dot’s book End the Silence on her website or at Createspace.

Did you know – one of our volunteer crew is a professional voice artist in his “other life”?
YEP – it’s true !
WHIDBEY AIR wants to congratulate Jim C. Dunn on the heels of his latest professional recording project, the audio book “Lift – Becoming a Positive Force in Any Situation” being released!!!
*
CONGRATULATIONS JIM! You’re a positive force on Whidbey AIR!
There are several of us who WISH we had what it takes to be “professional” in the recording world, but Jim actually is (!!!) and Whidbey AIR is so happy he gives his personal time, and his professional expertise and technology skills as a volunteer board member, host and techno powerhouse.

Synethesia is a condition of the sensory brain where a person can actually hear color. Kim Tinuviel has this condition. Synethesia has profoundly influenced both Kim’s work as photographer and as a classically trained musician. Tinuviel is a graduate of the famous Juliard school for talented musical performers. During this interview Isle co-hosts Mary Rose Anderson and Annie Zeller Horton experiment with trying to hear colors while listening to some of Kim’s music.
The influence of time and the elements on surface and color is the basis for the photographic series ChromoAlchemy, which is showing at Galeria Chiropractica in Bayview on Whidbey Island, December 2012 through January 2013. While the composition of each of these abstract and impressionistic images originates from some everyday object or other, that original source may no longer be obvious. Indeed, the viewer is encouraged to look beyond the literal and bring his or her own perception to the interpretation, thereby rendering the source object irrelevant. The title of the series, ChromoAlchemy is derived from the Greek, chromo (khroma: color) and alchemy (chumeia: mixture).

We heard from a, culinary loving, bird that Gordon Stewart, of Gordon’s of Blueberry Hill, has applied to be on the Food Network show CHOPPED! Can it be true ?
We have it from secure sources, it’s true.
Mary Rose Anderson interviewed Gordon, and his then fiancee Kaycee, on Whidbey AIR’s Isle of the Arts earlier this year. Today is the perfect time to feature that recording as a blog post. The link to listen is below.
On the heels of Island Recycling & Dave and Jill Campbell being on the show American Pickers, it looks like our little rock is making television headlines, from History to Food.
We’re not sure how one is chosen to be on the Food Network show Chopped, but we do have a contact page for the Food Network – if you’d like to drop them a cyber line go give them your vote for Gordon.
